Opinionated Physics

CARDS is lightly opinionated on the model of physics used to express the way that magic and science fit tgether in a cohesive universe.

Synopsis by analogy

The universe model is a simplified expression of the complex nature of quantum physics, which is a lower resolution model than that theorized by Stephen Wolfram in The Wolfram Physics Project.

Conway's Game of life

The fundamental concept of the universe is that it is a cellular automata very much like Conway's Game of Life, just with more dimensions and rules.

The summary of the game is that its universe is a grid of 1 bit cells that may be either in the state alive or dead.

The universe evolves in discrete time steps, where the state of each cell is determined by the state of its neighbors in the previous time step.

What emerges from this simple rule is a complex system that simulates the behavior of life, including self-replication, evolution, and even the construction of complex machines.

The Tensor Field

What makes the CARDS model unique is the simplification of the universe down into a field of tensors, which can be imagined as an continous spectrum of 3d toxels or 'tensory voxels'. This field is called the Multiway Graph of Causality (MGC).

To simplify this further, imagine a 1024x1024 pixel image, where each pixel can have any hexadecial color value. In this simpler analogy, the pixel is the voxel, and the color value is the tensor.

Given infinite time, this low resolution image could be used to view any point in the universe.

Planes

Many of the possible images that could be generated would be meaningless to a human observer, and from what we do find meaningful, much of it would vary by only a single pixel with an integer hex value that is off by one.

A plane of existence is such a group of meaningful images that are so similar they essentially collapse into a single image or meaningful concept of reality.

Of course, reality happens in the tensor field, not in the image, so the concepts of reality we call planes are the multiverse of dimensions.

A collection of planes is called a Sphere, wherein the denizens of the planes in the sphere can interact with each other through Gates because the laws of phsyics are near enough to each other in the Ruliad.

Positionality

All living creatures exist on a particular plane, which holds meaning to them because the rules which express them as creatures express their whole plane.

All other planes which have meaning to a creature do so because their emerging rules can also express that creature. The collection of these planes is called a Sphere.

All other spheres contain rules which cannot express that creature.

Everything between the spheres is called the Void, because the rules of physics in those parts of the Ruliad cannot express existence. There is too much contradiction among the rules.

Everything between the planes is called the Flux, because the rules of physics in the Ruliad are transitioning between the rules of the planes, and the expression of a creature in the Flux naturally collapses toward the rules of one of the nearest planes.

Positionality is the concept of being somewhere in the tensor field, which is a four dimensional field of space and time.

At every given point of the tensor field its possible next state is determined by the underlying rules of the universe, similiar to Conway's Game of Life. The time between the two states is a discrete step of time called the elementary time step (ETS).

This is why a creature does no instantly disintegrate between two discrete steps of time. The higher level abstract structure of the creature is complex enough that its underlying structure uses the underlying rules of the universe to persist itself as the same expression of the creature in the next time step.

This is also why the planes collapse toward a concrete reality. The plane itself is a higher level abstract structure that is comprised of the creatures that inhabit that plane, they are like the toxels to the universe which is the plane.

Therefore, the positionality of a creature is the position in the tensor field expressed as a point of time and space, such that getting to any other point requires travelling through adjoining states of the tensor field.

Continuity

While, positionally, it is possible to travel as if through time to a place that appears to be in the past of a travelling creature, the creature itself must always be moving forward in time in order to maintain continutiy of information.

A true path backward through the tensor field would delete the information of the creature that existed in the future state because the information of its future state did not exist in the past state, thus, they would continue in a forward path through the tensor field again just as they did before, as if the travel backwards in time never happened. This is why it is not even possible to travel backwards even one discrete step of time in the tensor field.

The flow of time is therefore like as though through a continuous valve.

Impact on CARDS

The model described above means that CARDS is able to ground magical effects, incredible technology, the existence of gods, and all other fantastical elements of roleplaying games in a consistent and coherent way.

This is especially important because CARDS attempts to be a generic system that can be used for any setting, and so it must have the complexity to rationalize different concepts of reality if desired, while also giving players the ability to ignore the complex rules if they choose.

As an example: if a GM wants to run a game that involves time travel, they can establish a series of logical outcomes that resolve on the basis of continuity and positionality. Or they can forgoe those ideas and stick to wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff. Or they can find somewhere along the spectrum that offers the freedom to explore the concept of time travel they want.

Even if this fundamental theory of the game's universe is fictional, the logical nature from which it is derived results in an ability to conceive of arbitrary scenarios which are consistent with each other, no matter how fantastical they may be.
